The Legends
There are some legends in Amasya told for ages. Ferhat and Sirin, Güzelce
Kız(cave with mirror),Kurtbogan, İnci Baba, Sercoban,Lokman Hekim are the
famous ones.
The Legend of Ferhat and Şirin
Ferhat who is a brave young man,is a decorator (nakkas) and loves Şirin. He
decorates the palaces, with the delicacy pouring from his brush. He explains
his feeling to Şirin.
Ferhat sends people to the Sultan of Amasya; Mehmene Banu in order to
explain his feeling about Şirin. Since Sultan doesn’t want to give Şirin to
him,he wants too difficult thing from Ferhat. "ıf you bring water to the
city, I will let you marry Şirin" But water is Şahinkaya where is a far
place.
But the love of Ferhat's heart doesn’t care about this condition. Take
his shovel and begins curving the rocks. Rocks are split and let water comes.
As the time passes the sound of water which comes through rocks is heard
from the city.
When Mehmene Banu recognizes his sister is gone, he makes plans stealthily
and make his men find a witch and sends to Ferhat. The witch finds Ferhat by
following the water canal and listening the sound of his pickaxe. The sound
of his pickaxe frightens the witch but than she laughs and say ‘Why do you
curve the rocks ambitiously? Şirin died. I bring you her halvah.’ When he
heard these words he shocked. He said ‘If Şirin hasn’t lived in this world
anymore, living in this world is meaningless. When he throws his pickaxe,
it hits on his head. He feels dizzy and his words ŞİRİN! echoes in the rocks.
When Şirin hears that Ferhat died,she runs to the rocks and sees the dead
body of Ferhat. She throws herself from the rockies and her dead body lies
near Ferhat.
Water comes to the city with its enthusiasm but the two young people haven’t
been in the world anymore. People bury them side by side. Every season, two roses
grow on their graves for the lovers but a bush grows between 2 graves and seperates the two lovers and two roses.
Güzelce Kız (Cave with Mirror)
Güzelce kız is the king's beautiful daughter. She is so beautiful that nobody
endures and they lose their self-control. So she always wears veil,and
doesn’t show her face to anybody.
His father thinks that it is the time for her to get married, he sends people
on all sides to inform the people that he will marry off his daughter. Who
endures his daughter’s beauty when she opens her veil, the king sives her to him.
The sons of viziers, riches, bravemen, scholars in short many people who
trust their power and their being young.
Güzelce Kız waits for the candidates in the private section which was built at the square. When the youngs come closer her, their hands begin to
shake while they are trying to open his veil, and they give way at the knees.
These stages go on for days.One day a brave and handsome but poor young man
comes and says that he wants to try his chance. He opens the veil of the
girl without wasting time. At that moment, everywhere is filled with flame
and brightness. Nobody understands what happens. The people at the square
lie ground with fear.Then these two young people lies together side by side
turning to coal in silence.
The corpse of them are bury to different rooms in a rock grave next to the
gardens next to the city. The surface of this rocky grave begins
shining under the sun as the face of the girl. Since the brightness on the
surface people call there "Cave with Mirror".
İğneci Baba
İğneci Baba and Sercoban are brothers and live in the Karasenir village in
Amasya. Serçoban is a shepherd known with his good manner and the simplicity
of his worship.
One day, he comes to visit his elder brother who is a shoe-maker in Amasya.
He puts some milk cowed from his sheep into a handkerchief as a present. His
aim is to show that the milk in the handkerchief that doesn’t leak. Sercoban
hangs the handkerchief on the wall of his shop. While İğneci Baba is taking
the measurements of one’s woman feet. When Sercoban thinks the beauty of her
heels,the milk begins to leak from the handkerchief.
İğneci Baba feels the distortion of his brother’s intention but doesn’t say a
word. When the lady leaves from the shop, İğneci Baba says that ‘miracle
worked by God is not to become a Saint on the mountains, but the miracle is
not to make leaking the milk in the handkerchief.
His grave is in Kocacık bazaar.
Serçoban
Sercoban is the brother of İğneci Baba who has a tomb in Kocacık Bazaar.
He is a shepherd.
One day while he was putting his animals out to pasture, one of his kid runs
away and he wants to catch it. Sercoban runs after it, but it escapes. He
becomes tired and says "If I catch you, I will cut you off." When he catches
the kid and ready for cutting it, he meets the emotional looking of the kid
and is affected and says "You make me tired, blessed kid" and sets free it.
When he dies, the each animal in the herd turns to a tree and forms a forest.
The place of the grave is visited as vow and promenade place. The people in
the area believe that when they chop the trees around the grave, it brings
good luck.
